What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses a mix of talking and art making. The art therapist supports the child, young person or adult, during a set weekly time, as they learn to use the art materials for self expression.
What is an Art Therapist?
An Art Therapist (or Art Psychotherapist) is someone who has undertaken a Masters level training in art therapy. In the UK this is regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). As a Trainee in Northern Ireland, I am in a HCPC approved masters programme.
How Can it Help?
Art therapy encourages adults, children and young people to better understand their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. By creating images and objects, people can begin to see their thoughts and feelings and then be supported by an art therapist to better understand themselves and find solutions. For some people, using art to express feelings can be easier and more helpful than traditional talking therapies.
